Enhance the Organization’s Public Standing – 10th of 10 Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards

Board members are a nonprofit organization’s ambassadors and advocates. Together with management, the board must communicate the story of the organization and contribute to a healthy public image of the organization.

They play an important role in representing the organization to funders, the community, elected officials, and other stakeholders.

They should be able to describe the organization’s purpose and activities in a concise and compelling fashion.

The board should know or decide who will serve as the official spokesperson for the organization. This individual will speak to the media and others to reduce confusion and miscommunication. A consistent message is essential in all circumstances.
