Ensure Effective Planning – 4th of 10 Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards

Nonprofit boards are also tasked with ensuring effective planning.

Through the planning process, they translate the organization’s mission into goals and objectives. These goals become the benchmarks for assessing the organization’s progress over time.

The type of planning that should be implemented will be based on the organization’s culture, life cycle, and capacity. Often an outside company is hired to assist with the planning, but stakeholders should also be included.

The goals can be used as a guide in budgeting and decision-making.

During planning, the board should stay focused on high-level issues, not on the details.
